LMEGA v London Stock Exchange - Denham GC

29/6/2017

The best that can be said of the day at Denham is that the course was in great condition, the lunch was superb and we avoided the forecast rain, as the Captain said in her post-match speech. Sadly, the London Stock Exchange prevailed once again.

The morning foursomes saw the teams go into lunch at 3-3, with good wins by Alex Heath and Steven Spencer (3 and 2), Jan Rommer and Martin Watkins (1 up) and Jake Doran and Bill Green (1 up).

With all to play for in the afternoon singles, the LMEGA saw themselves in the lead at the fifth of the twelve singles. Wins by Brian Woodbridge (7 & 6), double winner Jake Doran (2 & 1), David Hardy (6 & 4) and a half by Jan Rommer left the LMEGA on 6 ½ - 4 ½ with 7 matches to come. In a strong counter attack, the LSE won the 6th, 7th and 8th matches to go ahead by 1 before David Farrar won the 9th match by 4 & 3 to draw level again at 7 ½ each. A victory was not to be, however, as the last three matches all went to the LSE, who retained the trophy by 10 ½ - 7 ½.

LMEGA v London Iron and Steel GS - Berkhamsted GC 2 June 2017

2/6/2017

The annual encounter with London Iron and Steel Exchange left the Beckermet trophy, a lump of iron ore, firmly in the hands of the LMEGA.

The opening match saw the Captain playing with Jan Rommer against Clive Jackson and Ian Cooper and a hard-fought game ended on the last green with the LMEGA one up.
The second morning match saw Edward Sawbridge and Paul Shuter going down to a strong pairing of Bill Ford and John Markham by 4 and 3.
In the third game, Steven Spencer and Derek Raphael combined well to hand a 6 and 5 beating to Richard Vick and Colin Griffiths, playing in his changed colours for this match.
The last pairings saw Neal Avent and Brian Woodbridge beat Richard Barber and John Stuart on the 18th by one hole to send the LMEGA in to lunch at 3-1.

The afternoon singles were played in fours. Due to a starter’s error in allowing too many society matches onto the course at the same time, there was a traffic jam at the tenth hole and it was decided to cut the matches to 9 holes from 18 and go home early. Despite a few drops of rain, the afternoon stayed fairly dry and the LMEGA thrived in the conditions.

Jan Rommer returned to form to beat John Markham 2 up and Brian Woodbridge was 7 up at the 9th against Clive Jackson. The match now stood at 5-1.
Steven Spencer was 7 up at the 9th against Ian Cooper and Paul Shuter gained revenge for his morning loss by beating Richard Vick 3 up.
Bill ford halved with Derel Raphael and despite Edward Sawbridge and the Captain going down in the afternoon, the LMEGA won 8 ½ to 3 ½
