City Competition - Effingham 2015

13/7/2015

The annual City Competition was played out on Thursday at Effingham GC on a glorious summer’s day with enough breeze to make the heat bearable and also to make you think about direction of drives. The run on the ball in very hard conditions was hardly believable, with 500 yard holes reachable in two and one 8-iron shot measured at 230 yards! An excellent lunch, good company, a fine course, wonderful greens and enjoyable golf all for £60, all missed by the more than 80 members who could not make the day for one reason or another.

In fact, the LMEGA could only turn out 8 players against the ten of the Forex GS and the Bank of England. This made the competition virtually unwinnable and the LMEGA came in last of the three, with the Forex GS worthy winners, picking up the singles prize as well.

Good scores were posted by Edward Sawbridge in the singles, Bill Smit and Steven Spencer and Yang Liu and Jan Rommer in the greensomes, but it was not enough to challenge.

There are no further events now until September, so you can all relax and enjoy the summer holiday.

LMEGA v LSE - Hankley Common 2015

Stock Exchange prove too hot to handle.

On what was our hottest day since 2006 we had hoped that those temperatures would melt the drive(s) of our competitors but that was not to be. In what is always a very friendly and anticipated encounter with the LMEGA ever hopeful that the golfing gods would smile on us we sat at lunch after the morning foursomes 4 points to 2 down, with Alex Heath (back to his old golfing form) and Colin Griffiths delivering the first point and Martin Abbott and Ed Sawbridge delivering the second. All still to play for.

Following an excellent lunch with water being the wine of choice, the 12 singles matches in the afternoon would hopefully deliver us from that deficit and give the LMEGA an all too rare victory against such usually confident opposition. But we had to wait until the 6th game result for our first point when our treasurer David Ratcliffe won on the 18th. The next match saw our Captain Richard O'Neill secure a half point against a 5 handicap, possibly the result of the day. Alex Heath and a very steady Martin Abbott delivered our remaining 2 points to leave the overall result 12 and a half points to 5 and a half points. And so The Stock Exchange GS retain the trophy with congratulations to their secretary Peter Gregory from our Captain together with our thanks to Hankley Common for presenting us with such a wonderful lush manicured course, superb catering and a genuine welcoming atmosphere that made it such a great day out.

Summer Tour - Portugal 2015

2/7/2015

Those of you who never made it missed one of the best tours we have made. The choice of courses was the Captain’s and he also selected the hotel. The 18 who travelled got four nights in a luxury hotel in Estoril, five rounds on championship links, all breakfast and dinners included (two nights with wine paid for), plus coach transfers for £850. Richard will no doubt include some comments in his Captain’s speech at the Annual Dinner at the Little Ship Club tonight.

The courses were Quinta da Marinha, Estoril, Penha Longa, Belas and Oitavos Dunes. Look them up and see what you missed! Four of the five rounds count towards the final score.

The first day at Quinta da Marinha was won by vice-captain Ashok Singhania with 36 points from Bill Smit with 33, the winner being cut two shots for the next day and the runner up one shot with the reverse happening at the bottom of the leaderboard. The second round at the beautiful Estoril was won by Steven Spencer with 35 points on a countback from David Hardy and Chris Jones.

Into the weekend and day three was at Belas in scorching heat where 34 points from Jan Rommer proved enough to beat Bill Smit into second place. The stunning Penha Longa resort on day four saw Frits Beek on 34 edge out Martin Abbott on 33. The order of play being decided Open style, the last four out on the final day at Oitavos Dunes were Frits Beek, David Hardy, Bill Smit and Chris Jones, with Garry Jones, Jan Rommer, Edward Sawbridge and Martin Abbott the only other realistic hopefuls.

The final round, played along the seashore at Oitavos claimed a few scalps, with Bill Smit, Chris Jones, Edward Sawbridge and Jan Rommer unable to overhaul the overnight 125 points of Frits Beek and the 34 points from Garry Jones, who shared the Foster Plate
