On what was our hottest day since 2006 we had hoped that those temperatures would melt the drive(s) of our competitors but that was not to be. In what is always a very friendly and anticipated encounter with the LMEGA ever hopeful that the golfing gods would smile on us we sat at lunch after the morning foursomes 4 points to 2 down, with Alex Heath (back to his old golfing form) and Colin Griffiths delivering the first point and Martin Abbott and Ed Sawbridge delivering the second. All still to play for.
Following an excellent lunch with water being the wine of choice, the 12 singles matches in the afternoon would hopefully deliver us from that deficit and give the LMEGA an all too rare victory against such usually confident opposition. But we had to wait until the 6th game result for our first point when our treasurer David Ratcliffe won on the 18th. The next match saw our Captain Richard O'Neill secure a half point against a 5 handicap, possibly the result of the day. Alex Heath and a very steady Martin Abbott delivered our remaining 2 points to leave the overall result 12 and a half points to 5 and a half points. And so The Stock Exchange GS retain the trophy with congratulations to their secretary Peter Gregory from our Captain together with our thanks to Hankley Common for presenting us with such a wonderful lush manicured course, superb catering and a genuine welcoming atmosphere that made it such a great day out.
