Past Captains' was held this year at Littlestone Golf Club, near Romney Marsh with stunning views over St Mary's Bay and the approaches to Folkestone. If you haven't played there, you should try to find time to play this wonderful links with hard fairways, beautiful greens and friendly members.
Thirteen past captains turned out this year: Ivor Foster (1971), Colin Griffith (1986), Martin Prevezer (1988), Clem Danin (1989), Alex Heath (1996), Bob Stevens (1997), Steven Spencer (2004), David Littlestone (2007), Derek Raphael (2008), Seamus O'Connell (2010), Brian Woodbridge (2011), Chris Jones (2014) and Ashok Singhania (2016).
The club having provided a sandwich lunch, the competition started out at 1 o'clock in sunshine but with a stiff north-easterly breeze that made the stroke index obsolete. In in the fading October light, the last trio were putting out the 18th in the gloaming. However, some good scores were posted given the impenetrable rough that trapped wayward shots and the hard fairways that allowed shots to roll into unseen bunkers.
Leaders in the clubhouse were Chris Jones with 33 and Bob Stevens with 34 points until the last group emerged from the dusk with Seamus O'Connell posting 36 and the winner, Steven Spencer 37, to take the cup at the last moment.
Dinner was taken in the evening and a few players turned out the following morning for a pleasant round on the Warren Course before setting off for home.
Enormous thanks go out to Clem Danin for painstakingly making arrangements with the club which made for a delightful day.
